importance of persuasion in business communication

I have this weird worldview that says that everything is influence...or I suppose you could say persuasion -- and I don't mean that negatively...like taking advantage of people or anything. Instead what I mean is, that everything influences and persuades everything else in one way or another.

And as marketers and online business owners we care about this because influence and persuasion is at the core of what we do. I'll give you an example: Have you ever been treated poorly at a store or by customer service? Of course! That's bad persuasion isn't it?

And this bad persuasion has influenced you to no longer buy from this company or business right? Has the opposite ever happened too, where the store owner or the customer service rep treated you beyond well, they went beyond the call of duty, and totally looked after you?

Sadly it doesn't happen often...but when it does...that's GOOD persuasion! So, persuasion -- good or bad -- influences our decision-making. And the same holds true for your customers and your target audience too. And, there are only two kinds of persuasion...positive persuasion or negative persuasion.

And everything...I mean EVERYTHING is either good persuasion or bad persuasion. And this totally elates to another concept I've come across, which is how your attitude, your personality, acts as a contagion towards others. This is called "Emotional Contagion." Wikipedia describes it this way:

"Emotional contagion is the phenomenon of having one person's emotions and related behaviors directly trigger similar emotions and behaviors in other people. synchronization of one's expressions, vocalizations, postures and movements with those of another person."

So emotional Contagion means that whatever emotion we’re feeling gets spread like a virus, positive or negative, to those near us. Scientists have found most laughter, for example, isn’t a direct result of something being funny. Instead, it’s a result of the laughter of others.

How does this relate to our online business and our marketing efforts? When people think of us, think of our business, and think of our products and services, we want them to be influenced positively not negatively, correct?

And so if that's the case, we need to be very aware in everything we do to ensure that we're intentionally creating a positive environment -- creating positive persuasion...from our branding and messaging to even the way we use our voice when we answer the phone or make...dorky videos for the internet!
