An indictment has been filed against Alexander Smirnov, a 43-year-old FBI informant, accusing him of providing the bureau with false information about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden during the 2020 presidential campaign.

The Justice Department revealed that Smirnov, who harbored a dislike for Joe Biden, was arrested in Las Vegas upon his return from an overseas trip.

The case originated from the special counsel investigation led by David Weiss, who is also overseeing the case against Hunter Biden and was appointed by then-President Donald Trump as the top federal prosecutor in Delaware.

The 37-page indictment outlines Smirnov’s role as a confidential human source for the FBI since 2010 and alleges that he “provided false derogatory information to the FBI” about both Bidens after Joe Biden became a presidential candidate in 2020.

Smirnov allegedly made false claims to the FBI, including stating that officials from Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company where Hunter Biden worked, informed him that they hired Hunter Biden to receive protection through his father, NBC News reported.
