FORT WORTH, Texas --- On the evening of Saturday, January 27, 2024, at approximately 10:06 p.m., Fort Worth Police Department officers observed a gray pickup truck exiting a parking lot without headlights at 1000 Foch St. The truck proceeded to drive the wrong way on Morton Street, a one-way street. Subsequently, it backed up, narrowly avoiding colliding with a marked police unit, and drove up onto a curb. The officers could hear the passenger instructing the driver to stop. Due to the erratic driving behavior, the officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, the driver fled, rapidly navigating through the parking lot.

At this point officers were concerned that the driver was possibly intoxicated due to his reckless driving and posed a threat to the public in a busy entertainment district, officers witnessed the truck striking curbs and nearly colliding with other vehicles while heading eastbound on West 7th Street. The suspect's actions escalated as the truck cut in front of oncoming traffic, jumped a curb into a bank parking lot, and struck a pole, resulting in severe damage to the front left wheel. Despite the compromised condition of the vehicle, the suspect continued to flee from officers at a high speed back towards the densely populated West 7th area.

Due to the erratic behavior of the suspect, officers decided to back off and slow down. The suspect maneuvered around stopped traffic at the intersection of West 7th and University, ultimately striking a pole and a stationary car. Additionally, the truck hit two pedestrians, an adult male and an adult female, who were on the far side of the intersection.

Responding officers were on the scene within seconds, providing immediate aid to the victims. Both individuals were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries. The suspected drunk driver, identified as Andrew Guerra, 29, from Grand Prairie, had to be extracted from the vehicle and was subsequently taken into custody. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries and refused to provide a blood sample. Consequently, officers obtained a search warrant to determine his blood alcohol content.

Andrew Guerra is currently held in the Tarrant County Jail on a $95,000 bond. He faces charges of Evading Arrest/Detention with Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Intoxication Assault with Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury, and Unlawful Restraint. Notably, Guerra has no prior alcohol-related convictions.

The passenger in Guerra’s truck has cooperated with the investigation and is considered the victim in the Unlawful Restraint charge. The police emphasize that Impaired driving is 100% preventable. Drunk driving cases are avoidable and can be traumatizing to victims and their families and put our community at risk. There are too many viable options available for people to get home safely without driving while impaired, such as rideshare, taxis, and designating a non-drinking driver when out with a group.
