This is a short bit of street footage that captures a kind of cultural value in the Hasidic community that I often talk about: concern for each other. It seems a Hasidic man sees a car about to get ticketed by a cop, and he stops to casually act like the car's owner, before ambling away.

A lot of people have different opinions about this kind of subversive behavior, but there is no doubt that this Hasidic man acted in the spirit of kindness to a random stranger. I think that this kind of action has deep roots in the Hasidic community's history of being persecuted by authorities in Eastern Europe (often abusive policing) and it has led to a sense that everyday people have to have each others' back. It's also simply, I think, a performance of chesed - charity.
