The Enterprise is surveying a nebula when its warp drive suddenly fails, causing the crew to black out. M'Benga awakens early, but the nebula has reshaped Enterprise's interior into the high fantasy setting of his daughter's favorite fairy tale, with the crew unwillingly roleplaying as its characters. He discusses the situation with Hemmer, the only other crew member aware of the situation, and they discover the nebula has its own consciousness, surmising that it is behind the role play. M'Benga materializes his daughter and asks for her help; she confirms the nebula had detected her energy pattern. Hemmer becomes the nebula's telepathic spokesperson; he says the nebula offered to cure her cytokinesia by converting her into an energy being, and constructed the fantasy to help M'Benga realize, through the tale's moral, that he should let her go. M'Benga decides to do so after saying his farewells, and the nebula releases Enterprise and restores its warp drive and normal interior.

Anson Mount as Christopher Pike: captain of the USS Enterprise. The writers took Mount's own leadership style as inspiration for the character. Co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman explained that Mount liked to find consensus within a group, and so a table was added to Pike's quarters where he could convene the crew and cook for them.
Ethan Peck as Spock: science officer aboard the Enterprise
Jess Bush as Christine Chapel: a civilian nurse on the Enterprise. Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers felt the character's portrayal in The Original Series came from a "very different conception of women and of marriage and what people would do in their jobs" that present-day audiences would not expect, and sought to tell new stories with a character inspired by Bush's strengths.
