The raid on former President Donald Trump has cast a spotlight on the partisanship and corruption at not only the FBI, but also at its parent agency, the Department of Justice. We already know that the claims made by Attorney General Merrick Garland during his press conference, including a focused and narrowly-scoped search, have fallen apart as the documents that lay behind the raid have become public.

There has been much speculation about the motivation of the FBI’s raid. Was it done to prevent Trump from running in 2024? Was the raid related to documents and evidence surrounding the January 6 Commission? While these factors may have had some bearing on the FBI’s raid, we think there are also some entirely different, and potentially larger, factors that may be at play.
