curveball hi and welcome back to bible
line i'm your host pastor jesse martinez
and in today's video we are going to
answer the question what does the bible
word repent mean it's a good question we
get this question often maybe you have
had this question before so i'm looking
forward to giving a good bible answer
before we get into the answer i want to
make sure to invite you to like comment
and share the video if you're here for
the first time hit the subscribe button
and the notification bell so that every
time we post a video you get an alert
and liking commenting and sharing is all
important so we encourage you to do that
too all right let's get into our
question today it's not really a
question
but it it is a question because a lot of
people are curious about this what does
the bible word repent mean
this in no way is an exhaustive study
we're not going to look at every single
verse in which the word repent is used
or a different form of the word repent
but it is a good lesson to learn
this is one of the lessons that is
important when we talk about the
original language the word repent in the
english understanding today in a modern
dictionary says to feel sorry to have
contrition
to have guilt about something
and in the bible that's not what's
taught about the word repent especially
the word that is used within the context
of scripture now we're going to look in
acts chapter 2 and verse 38
this is probably the verse that i hear
the most because it has the word repent
and it has the word baptized and people
like to marry these two things and say
you have to turn from your sin and you
have to get water baptized these two
things combined together
now you're saved but does the bible
really teach that first of all let's
read the verse peter is talking to a
group of jews here this is actually the
first message after he has been given
the gift of the holy spirit jesus has
ascended and they're given a message and
here's what he says then peter said unto
them repent and be baptized every one of
you in the name of jesus christ for the
remission of sins and ye shall receive
the gift of the holy ghost
that's the verse
now when we look at the word repent here
we have to understand we need to look at
the greek definition of repent now i'm
not saying you have to have a greek
education or have a knowledge of of
koine greek and how to speak it and how
to identify things those things may be
beneficial but this is a simple study of
the word
the word repent which it's used 24 times
in the new testament and this greek word
is metanoia metanoia is how you would
say it together
and it is meant to think differently
to change your mind
so
why would peter be telling
the jewish people to change their mind
what what did they think about which
needed a change in order for them to
believe on the lord jesus christ well if
you go all the way back up to verses 22
and 23 he says this ye men of israel so
there's his audience ye men of israel
he's talking to jews here you men of
israel hear these words jesus of
nazareth a man approved of god among you
by miracles and wonders and signs which
god did by him in the midst of you as ye
yourselves also know verse 23 him jesus
being delivered by the determinant
counsel and foreknowledge of god ye have
taken
and by wicked hands have crucified
and slain so there's what peter is
telling them to repent about the next
several verses go through all the things
that jesus fulfilled in the old
testament that any common jew who knew
the law and had the law taught to them
would be able to understand and we know
that they understood these things
because the question that they ask right
before peter gives them the answer of
repent change your mind about who jesus
was you thought he was a criminal that
he was a blasphemer well he's actually a
messiah you killed the messiah change
your mind about that and believe on him
and the baptism was a demonstration of
what they had believed and that's how
they would receive the holy ghost at
that time
now look what he says here in verse 36
of acts chapter 2 therefore let all the
house of israel know assuredly that god
hath made that same jesus whom ye have
crucified
oops
they crucified him
both lord and christ now when they heard
this they were pricked in their heart
they were convicted
of this truth jesus is the messiah we
did make a mistake we're changing our
minds and and i believe many people got
saved right there in that moment because
they put their faith in him as his as
their messiah but they said unto him and
said unto peter and to the rest of the
apostles men and brethren what shall we
do
then said peter unto them i'm going to
read this to you two ways the english
translation way of the word repent today
and the greek word metanoia to change or
think differently
then peter said unto them
turn from your sin
and be baptized every one of you or be
sorry for sin
no
the greek word fits the right definition
then said peter unto them change your
mind specifically about what what you
thought and who you thought jesus was
believe on what he said he was the
messiah
the lamb of god to take away all the
sins of the world
it's very important to understand this
word repent so if a person's asking
is repentance required for salvation yes
it is a hundred percent that's not a
curveball
but it's understanding that it's a
change of mind when i was 12 years old
and my uncle sat me down i thought that
my good works were going to get me to
heaven
he introduced me to what jesus christ
did how i could not work for myself and
because of that information i repented i
changed my mind of what i was putting my
faith in to get me to heaven and put my
faith in jesus christ
i hope that makes sense to you if you
