The NORC has been doing this poll for just over 50 years. The latest iteration was conducted in March 2023 and surveyed 1,019 Americans. There is an Overall drop in unhappiness: The poll found that just 12% of Americans consider themselves "very happy" - the lowest ever recorded in the poll's 50+ year history. The Religious are happier: Among the 12% that are "very happy," the highest correlation was with those who believe in God - where 68% considered their beliefs "very important" to them. By contrast, among those who said they were not happy, just 42% say belief in God is important to them. As for Marriage: The "very happy" respondents also value marriage, with 67% saying it's very important to them. Bell said he's not aware of China buying up any farmland specifically in North Carolina. He considers that good news and hopes this bill becomes law to make sure it stays that way. "I don't know of any of those situations happening in North Carolina so far," he said in an interview. "But I'd rather deal with it before it happens." The House Rules Committee approved the bill, HB 463, setting it up for a vote on the full House floor. Many other states are considering similar proposals, ranging across the political spectrum from New York and California to North Dakota and Utah. The bipartisan support extends to North Carolina, too. A number of Democrats co-sponsored the bill including Rep. Robert Reives of Chatham County, the Democratic leader in the House. By all accounts, these types of bills in state legislatures across the country aren't targeting anything that's already happening — China is responsible for just a tiny fraction of foreign-owned land inside the United States, which is itself a tiny fraction of the total amount of American land. Stateline, an initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts, reported last month that China owns just over 383,000 acres of land in the U.S. That's roughly the same total area as Harnett County. Most of that land, Stateline reported, transferred to Chinese ownership in 2013 when a Chinese company that's partially owned by the Chinese government bought Smithfield foods. According to MSN, An IRS special agent involved in the federal investigation into Hunter Biden’s taxes is seeking whistleblower protections to provide what are said to be sensitive disclosures about the probe to Congress. But thanks to the Chinese-owned Cathay Bank, the Republicans got a peek under the kimono. The story continues, Attorney Mark D. Lytle, a lawyer for the unnamed IRS employee, wrote in a letter Wednesday to a bipartisan group of lawmakers that he represents a “career IRS Criminal Supervisory Special Agent who has been overseeing the ongoing and sensitive investigation of a high profile, controversial subject since early 2020” and would like to make protected whistleblower disclosures to Congress. While Lytle did not name Biden in the letter obtained by NBC News, a source familiar with the matter who also verified the authenticity of the letter said the investigation in question refers to the federal probe into the finances of President Joe Biden’s son Hunter.
