Young Adults’ Use of Popular Weight Loss Drugs Wegovy and Ozempic Skyrockets by 594%
Recent data reveals a sharp rise in the use of weight loss drugs among U.S. youth, with significant gender disparities and concerns over off-label use and long-term effects.
Public interest in weight loss medications such as Wegovy and Ozempic is rapidly increasing, yet there is a surprising lack of national data on their dispensing patterns in the United States.
Now, a national study from Michigan Medicine reveals that the use of these weight loss drugs is increasing rapidly in adolescents and young adults 12-25 years, especially females. Using 2020 – 2023 data from a national database representing 92% of pharmacies, the study team found a 594% increase in the monthly number of adolescents and young adults using Wegovy, Ozempic, and other glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs).

Scientists Uncover Key Brain Development Differences in Autistic Boys and Girls
A study indicates that autistic females experience a more rapid rate of cortical thinning throughout childhood.
Researchers at the University of California, Davis have discovered significant variations in brain development between autistic boys and girls aged 2-13. The findings, published in Molecular Psychiatry, reveal sex-specific differences in the thickness of the brain’s cortex.
The findings are notable because so few studies have addressed cortical development in autistic girls, who are diagnosed with autism less often than males. Nearly four males are diagnosed with autism for every one female.
“It is clear that this sex bias is due, in part, to underdiagnosis of autism in females,” said Christine Wu Nordahl, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the UC Davis MIND Institute and a senior author on the paper. “But this study suggests that differences in diagnosis are not the full story — biological differences also exist.”

NASA Unveils Game-Changing Infrared Cameras for Earth and Space Exploration
A newly developed infrared camera featuring high resolution and equipped with a range of lightweight filters has the potential to analyze sunlight reflected from Earth’s upper atmosphere and surface, enhance forest fire alerts, and uncover the molecular composition of other planets.
These cameras are equipped with sensitive, high-resolution strained-layer superlattice sensors, originally developed at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, funded through the Internal Research and Development (IRAD) program.
Thanks to their compact design, low weight, and versatility, engineers such as Tilak Hewagama can customize them for diverse scientific applications.

Turning Back Time: Study Links Key Nutrients to Slower Brain Aging
Participants whose brains aged more slowly had a nutrient profile that was similar to that of the Mediterranean diet.
Scientists have been extensively researching the brain to promote healthier aging. Although there is considerable knowledge about risk factors that speed up brain aging, there is less understanding of how to prevent cognitive decline.
There is evidence that nutrition matters, and a novel study published on May 21 in the journal Nature Aging, from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign further signals how specific nutrients may play a pivotal role in the healthy aging of the brain.

Network of Robotic Telescopes Finds New Earth-Sized World Orbiting an Ultra-Cool Star
Astronomers have discovered an Earth-sized planet, SPECULOOS-3 b, orbiting an ultra-cool red dwarf star just 55 light years away. This tidally locked planet, which completes an orbit every 17 hours, was found by the international SPECULOOS project using a network of robotic telescopes.
A new, Earth-sized planet orbiting an ultra-cool red dwarf star, has been detected by an international team of astronomers – just 55 light years away.
The planet is only the second of its kind to be discovered around this type of star. Called SPECULOOS-3 b, it takes around 17 hours to complete an orbit of the star which is more than twice as cold as our sun, as well as ten times less massive and a hundred times less luminous.

Archaeologists Unearth Lost Camps of Chile’s Elephant Hunters
Temporary campsites indicate repeated visits by early hunter-gatherers.
Thousands of years ago, early hunter-gatherers frequently visited Tagua Tagua Lake in Chile to hunt prehistoric elephants and utilize the area’s resources, according to a study recently published in the journal PLOS ONE by Rafael Labarca and colleagues from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
Multiple archaeological sites are known from the region of Tagua Tagua Lake in central Chile, representing some of the earliest known human settlements in the Americas. In this study, Labarca and colleagues report the recent discovery of a new site called Taguatagua 3, an ancient hunter-gatherer camp dating to the Late Pleistocene, between 12,440 and 12,550 years old.

White and Black: Unveiling the Secrets of Saudi Arabia’s Volcanic Giants
Harrat Khaybar, a major volcanic field in Saudi Arabia, showcases a diverse range of volcanoes and eruptions, reflecting millions of years of geological activity. The contrasting colors of lava and ash reveal the geologic origins of Harrat Khaybar’s volcanic cones.
While the Arabian Peninsula is known for its vast deserts of sand, the area also contains extensive fields of lava. At least 12 volcanic fields, known as harrats, are contained in the western half of the peninsula. One such field is the 14,000-square-kilometer (5,400-square-mile) Harrat Khaybar, one of the largest in Saudi Arabia.

Pioneering the Fight Against Dementia: 20,000 Volunteers Join Groundbreaking Study
More than 20,000 volunteers have been recruited to a resource aimed at speeding up the development of much-needed dementia drugs. The cohort will enable scientists in universities and industry to involve healthy individuals who may be at increased risk of dementia in clinical trials to test whether new drugs can slow the decline in various brain functions including memory and delay the onset of dementia.
Using the resource, scientists have already been able to show for the first time that two important bodily mechanisms – inflammation and metabolism – play a role in the decline in brain function as we age.
