Bernie Sanders is a presidential contender for the Democratic Party in the United States. After gaining re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote, he is now serving his second term in the United States Senate. Sanders was the mayor of Vermont's largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to become the state's lone representative in the United States House of Representatives. He and his wife Jane live in Burlington, Vermont, and they have four children and seven grandchildren.

Bernard "Bernie" Sanders was born to immigrant parents in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in a modest, rent-controlled apartment.
