The Galapagos Islands are home to many wonderful and unique creatures. The sea lions are among the most interesting of all and they inhabit almost every beach and rocky shore around the islands. In the day, they spread themselves out on flat surfaces to sun themselves and relax. They nap on park benches, picnic tables, sandy beaches, and even sidewalks and roads.

Sea lions are adorably clumsy on land, yet agile and graceful in the water. A sea lion waddling over the sand to reach the water is an entertaining sight and it's hard not to chuckle when they rock back and forth with the effort of each step. This tourist couldn't resist following along with this large bull as he walked and rested alternately on his long trek to the surf. As if pretending to stop for another break, the sea lion started to stretch out on the sand. But he quickly turns toward the camera man and picks up speed. This is the equivalent of a sea lion sprint and there is no mistaking this as a message for the man to move farther away. Without hesitation, he does exactly that.

In the Galapagos Islands, there is a firm rule that people always maintain 2m (6 feet) of distance between them and the wildlife . Although this was the case here, the sea lion clearly indicated his preference for a little extra distance. Once it was obvious that he had made his feelings known, he resumed his waddling to the water. With a comical rhythm, he shuffles and steps, swinging from side to side as he moves. Once he is in water deep enough to float, the sea lion shows just how easily they move in the ocean. He is gone in a flash.

Sea lions are referred to as sea dogs and they really are much like large puppies. Their faces seem to be smiling all the time.
