Chandrayaan is a series of lunar
exploration missions by the lndian
Space Research Organisation (|SRO).
The program aims to study the Moon's
surface and conduct scientific
investigations.
Chandrayaan-1, launched in 2008, was
India's first lunar mission and
operated for almost a year. It
successfully discovered water
molecules on the Moon's surface,
contributing significantly to lunar
science.
Chandrayaan-2, launched in July 2019,
was the subsequent mission and
consisted of an orbiter, lander
(Vikram), and rover (Pragyan). The
orbiter continues to function and has
been performing remote sensing
observations from lunar orbit.
The primary objectives of Chandrayaan
missions include studying the lunar
surface, identifying water-ice in the
polar regions, analyzing mineral
composition, and understanding the
Moon's geological evolution. These
missions showcase India's space
exploration capabilities and contribute
valuable data to the global scientific
community.
