Germany: 'It's unbearable' - Berliners protest for affordable housing amid soaring rents

Berlinerinnen und Berliner haben am Samstag für bezahlbaren Wohnraum, gegen Spekulation und gegen steigende Mieten protestiert. Die Demonstranten trugen Transparente mit Slogans wie "Schluss mit der Gier - Wohnen ist keine Ware", "Spekulanten, haut ab" und "Bezahlbarer Wohnraum für alle", als sie durch die Hauptstadt zogen. "Wenn man sieht, wie Wohnungen und Mieten steigen und in welche Richtung es wieder geht, mit der Politik, mit dem Wohneigentum, und wir haben mehrere Reden gehört, dass bezahlbare Wohnungen abgerissen werden, um Luxuswohnungen zu bauen. Das kann einfach nicht sein und ist unerträglich", sagte ein Demonstrant in einem Interview. Eine aktuelle Studie des Immobilienportals Immowelt zeigt, dass der Mietmarkt in Deutschland weiter anzieht, und zwar nirgendwo so sehr wie in der Hauptstadt. Seit November 2022 sind die durchschnittlichen Verkaufspreise für neue Mietverträge um 27 Prozent von 9,86 Euro auf 12,55 Euro pro Quadratmeter für eine 80 Quadratmeter große Wohnung gestiegen. Mit diesen Rekordmieten ist Berlin nach München die zweitteuerste Stadt Deutschlands, was die Wohnungspreise angeht.

Berliners protested for affordable housing, against speculation and against increasing rents on Saturday. Protesters carried banners reading slogans. such as 'End the greed- Housing is not a commodity', 'Speculators, get lost', and 'Affordable housing for everyone', among others as they marched through the capital. "When you see how housing and rents are rising and in which direction it is heading again, with politics, with home ownership, and we have heard several speeches that affordable housing is being demolished to build luxury apartments. That just can’t happen and it is unbearable," said a protester during an interview. A recent survey by the real estate portal Immowelt showed that the rental market in Germany continue to accelerate, and nowhere more so than in the capital. Since November 2022, the average selling prices of new rental contracts have increased by 27 percent from €9.86 (10.72$) to €12.55 ($13.64) per square metre for an apartment measuring 80 square metres (3,150 square inches). With rents at a record high, Berlin the second most expensive city in terms of housing prices in Germany, seconding only Munich.

Un reciente estudio del portal inmobiliario Immowelt muestra que el mercado del alquiler en Alemania sigue acelerándose, y en ningún sitio más que en la capital. Desde noviembre de 2022, los precios medios de venta de los nuevos contratos de alquiler han aumentado un 27%, pasando de 9,86 euros (10,72 dólares) a 12,55 euros (13,64 dólares) por metro cuadrado para un apartamento de 80 metros cuadrados (3.150 pulgadas cuadradas). Con los alquileres en máximos históricos, Berlín es la segunda ciudad más cara en cuanto al precio de la vivienda en Alemania, sólo superada por Múnich.
