Gerard Butler has established himself as one of the busiest action stars in the industry, battling out-of-control weather satellites in Geostorm, serving as the President's most trusted Secret Service agent during three (!) terrorist attacks in the Has Fallen trilogy, leading the Spartan army into battle in 300, and most recently crashing a plane in Plane. This summer, the Scottish-born actor will make a comeback on the big screen with his most recent action movie, Kandahar.

According to reports, the story of Kandahar was inspired by Mitchell LaFortune's own experiences as a military intelligence officer sent to Afghanistan in the wake of the Snowden leaks. The movie seeks to offer a unique perspective on the controversy surrounding Edward Snowden's intelligence leaks in 2013. Making news as one of the first high-profile Hollywood films to be shot entirely in Jeddah and Al-Ula, Saudi Arabia. In essence, Kandahar is an action-thriller that follows the life of a CIA agent. Learn everything there is to know about the movie's release, storyline, cast, shooting, and more.

How Does Kandahar Work?
The Kandahar movie's official synopsis is as follows:

Tom Harris, a CIA undercover agent, is stranded in Afghanistan's dangerous interior. He must battle his way to an extraction site in Kandahar with his Afghan translator after an intelligence leak reveals his name and objective, all the while dodging the elite special forces squad entrusted with tracking them down.

Former military intelligence officer Mitchell LaFortune's spec script served as the basis for the plot of Kandahar. The movie, which is set during the 2013 Snowden leaks, provides an original viewpoint on the happenings. The main characters of the film are an Afghan interpreter and an undercover CIA agent named Tom Harris who is on a risky assignment in Afghanistan. The movie chronicles how the two escape the elite special forces team tasked with finding them and get at an extraction site 400 miles away in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

On December 2, 2021, the majority of Kandahar's Saudi Arabian filming got under way. As a result, Jeddah and Al-Ula, two cities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Hejaz area and an old Arabic oasis city, saw the first high-profile American production to shoot there. Al-Ula is located in the northwest Saudi Arabian province of Medina. The film uses Al-barren Ula's landscape to create sequences that are evocative of Afghanistan.

The Last Great B-Movie Action Hero Is Gerard Butler

Kandahar: Who is there?
The initial casting news for the movie came in June 2020 with the declaration that Gerard Butler will both produce and feature in it. Tom Harris, the protagonist, will be portrayed by the seasoned actor. With his roles in movies like 300, Copshop, Den of Thieves, Geostorm, Plane, and the Has Fallen film trilogy, Butler has solidified his reputation as a skilled actor, particularly in the action genre. In Kandahar, Ric Roman Waugh, the director of Greenland and Angel Has Fallen, reteams with Butler.

Navid Negahban, an Iranian-American actor who lives in America, co-stars with Butler as Harris's Afghan translator. He will appear beside Butler throughout the movie as the two try to flee the Afghan special forces together. Since Harris will be in charge of assisting Negahban in returning safely home, it's possible that his character may wind up defying the plot. Many television shows, including 24, Homeland, Mistresses, and Disney's live-action Aladdin remake, have featured Navid Negahban.

Ali Fazal, an Indian actor who earned a name for himself in Hollywood with roles in movies like Victoria & Abdul and Murder on the Nile, will also be seen in Kandahar. His persona is still mostly unknown, however it is assumed that he would be an assassin for the Afghan special forces. Safar, a character played by Fazal, made a guest cameo in Furious 7.

Additional cast members include Nina Toussaint-White (Bodyguard) and Travis Fimmel (Vikings) in unspecified roles, as well as Olivia-Mai Barrett (Penny on M.A.R.S.) as Ida Harris and Bahador Foladi (Tehran) as Farzad Asadi.
