CRASH avoided; two planes almost collided at Reykjavik airport 🇮🇸

That was a close call on the last day of August 2022.

Fifteen meters above the runway, or just a few seconds before actually touching down at the runway of Reykjavik’s Keflavik airport in Iceland, is all that an Iceland Air Boeing 737 MAX 9 had left to avoid a catastrophic crash. A few hundred meters in front of the plane was another Iceland Air plane on the runway, waiting for their time to take off.

This almost accident – which could have been one of the worst aviation disasters ever – was narrowly avoided. The arriving plane made a short go-around to land at the other runway of the airport fifteen minutes later. The Boeing 757 that was about to depart for Milan, Italy, departed on time and also arrived without incident.

Isavia, the Icelandic air traffic control, has confirmed to the Icelandic Flugblogg that the incident had occurred, but declined any further comments on how this incident could happen. Weather data retrieved from METAR information showed that visibly at the airport was between 2.000 and 4.000 meters with light rain and a cloud base at just 100 meters.
