Why Did The Mafia Hate JFK? #shorts

JFK is known for many things. He was the president, usually regarded as one of our country’s greatest. He was the youngest person ever elected at the time, the only Catholic, and he started the space race that got us to the moon. But one thing that JFK is perhaps most known for, and continues to dominate pop culture for, is that on November 22, 1963, he was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas. The official story of what happened, who killed him, and how, remains to this day a source of extreme controversy.

How JFK was elected

We tend to think of “the mob” as a group of well-dressed thugs that sells drugs, knock over liquor stores, and make people offers they can’t refuse.
And we tend to think of the Kennedys as these great leaders that started the Peace Corps and pushed for civil rights and catapulted the country into the 60s.

JFK’s dad was Joe Kennedy, a rich man who made his fortune by bootlegging alcohol during prohibition. Joe Kennedy had serious mob connections as a result of bootlegging, and he wasn’t afraid to call in favors to help himself and his family gain power.

He was obsessed with making his family as powerful as possible.
He hoped his oldest son Joe Kennedy, Jr. would be president one day.
But fate had other plans for him. Joe Junior was an army pilot and was killed in battle during World War II. So it was up to Joe’s second son John, to become the family’s political head.

Why JFK was assassinated

So why did the mob want JFK killed after everything they’d done to get him elected?

There are actually a few different reasons the mob wanted Kennedy gone.
The first reason was vengeance. When Castro successfully led a Communist revolution in Cuba, the mafia lost a huge source of income.

Havana was like a second Las Vegas. There were casinos and hotels all over the city that Americans flew to whenever they wanted a quick getaway, and most of them were controlled by the mob. When Kennedy failed to get rid of Castro with his Bay of Pigs mishap, the mob took a hit they weren’t prepared for.

Secondly and most importantly, the Mafia had to put an end to JFK’s brother’s crusade against the mob. Joe Kennedy promised that the mob would be safe with JFK in office. What he didn’t count on was that when he helped JFK’s younger brother, Robert Francis Kennedy, become Attorney General under JFK, RFK would make it his personal mission to topple organized crime in the country.

How did the Mafia kill JFK?

Up until very recently, the government’s official account of JFK’s assassination was that there was no conspiracy and that there was only one shooter, Lee Harvey Oswald. We could go into all the mechanics of the assassination and why the official story makes no sense. In short, the official story is riddled with holes and physical impossibilities, and much of it has been recanted by the government itself in the years since the Warren Commission was released. The important thing to note is that even the official record couldn’t hide all mob involvement.

When Ruby killed Oswald, that was the first time the public began to question whether the mob might’ve been involved. Word eventually got out that eyewitnesses saw Jimmy Hoffa- a known mobster and the president of the Teamsters union- openly cheer in a diner when the TV showed the news report of JFK’s assassination.

But even though the entire world was watching Ruby after he shot Lee Harvey Oswald, it didn’t stop him from becoming a target too.
When Jack Ruby was interviewed for the Warren Commission in 1964, he told them repeatedly that he was in danger. He told the Warren Commission that he wanted to tell the truth about the mob’s involvement in JFK’s assassination, but he wasn’t comfortable doing so, until he was in a safe location.

The Warren Commission simply told him that they didn’t have any police powers, and so they made no effort to protect him. In 1967, Jack Ruby died in jail. His official cause of death was a “pulmonary embolism”.
G. Robert Blakey, who was the Chief Counsel and Staff Director to the House Select Committee, even admitted that Ruby’s most likely motive for killing Oswald was that Ruby had “stalked him on behalf of organized crime, trying to reach him on at least three occasions…before he silenced him forever”.

For 50 years the world had to sit on those facts and decide for themselves what they thought happened.
