7 FACTS ABOUT RHINOCEROS
7 FACTS ABOUT RHINOCEROS🦏
1. There are more than one species of rhino In all, there are five different types of rhino. They are: black rhino and white rhino, found in eastern and southern Africa; Sumatran rhino, Javan rhino and Indian rhino, which can be found in India, Nepal, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.
2. The horns are composed of keratin Contrary to what many people think, rhino horns are not bones, but composed of a protein called keratin, which grows throughout the life of the animal. This protein is also found in human hair and nails. The longest rhino horn ever measured was just under 150 centimeters according to the International Rhino Foundation.
3. Rhino horns (supposedly) have healing properties. Although there is no evidence, doctors in Asia have used powdered rhino horn in their medicine for centuries. According to the International Rhino Foundation, the horn has been used to treat and cure a number of ailments including: arthritis, asthma, cold, chickenpox, seizures, cough, diphtheria, among others.
4. The white rhino is the third largest land mammal. The white rhino is the third largest land mammal, after African and Asian elephants, weighing more than two tons. Their heads alone can weigh up to 900 kilograms, measuring up to 1.8 meters in height.
5. Rhinos are herbivores. Its size might suggest a large carnivorous animal, but in fact rhinos are herbivores that eat up to 100 pounds of food a day. Its diet consists of leaves, fruits, grasses, stems and twigs.
6. Super sensitive skin. Despite inhabiting warm and sunny places, rhino skins are not weather resistant, being very susceptible to burns and insect bites. As a way to protect themselves, they often take mud baths to form an extra layer for their skin.
7. Communication is done with infrasonic frequencies Like elephants, rhinos communicate using infrasonic frequencies that are below the human threshold of hearing. The researchers believe that this technique was adapted due to the dense vegetation, and it is also used to attract mates for breeding.
