Don’t Make This Beginner Mistake When Buying a Polywire Reel
Installing a cut-off switch for our electric fence setup and explaining why I messed up when I bought this pre-loaded polywire reel. Time to move the beef steer!

We’re very new in our journey into rotational grazing and regenerative agriculture. I’m someone who likes to think things through (and about 5 or 6 steps ahead) so anticipating where all my fence connections, gates, etc. need to be is a pretty daunting task. That’s why when I bought this pre-spooled polywire reel I deliberately did as little thinking as possible so the wire would get up as soon as possible. Now it’s time to move our steer and I’ve got to rework a few things that will make future moves a little easier.
One thing I’ve learned about this reel is that I bought it with WAY too much wire. I have had some serious backlash that makes me regret my life decisions (kidding). The way to fix this is to either cut the wire off the reel now and stash it somewhere for future use or just deal with it and cut short pieces off as they are needed elsewhere.
And just to be clear, I love this reel and have no complaints about it. My mistake isn’t a negative reflection on the reel, and I’ll be adding more as the need arises.
Soon we’ll be doing a follow-up on the pasture the steer moved out of. I think it will be a good way to show why you want to avoid overgrazing on particular spots (hint: weeds). Be sure to subscribe so you won’t miss that video! If you enjoyed this one be sure to like it and share it with a friend. See y’all soon!

Our FIRST Nubian Kid! Goat Birth on the Family Homestead

When Megan decided she wanted to dive into the world of dairy goats she was torn between Nigerian Dwarfs and Nubians. Ultimately, for a couple different reasons, we opted for Nigerian Dwarfs and so far they have been wonderful, but when the opportunity to purchase a bred Nubian doe presented itself we couldn’t help but jump on it. Belle Starr quickly acclimated to life here on our homestead and has become a favorite for our kids because of her sweet temperament.
Of course, as goats tend to do, Belle decided to kid at a very inopportune time for us. We’re thankful for an easy delivery of a healthy goat kid, who just so happens to be the spotted doeling that Megan was praying for. Little Lainey is a treat and Megan has discovered just how amazing it is to have a full-size goat in the milk program. We may be making some changes to our homestead in the future!

Only a Couple More Days of This #shorts
Why do we do this everyday? Because we love it. We love the challenge and the reward of growing our own food. The past 7 weeks have been hectic to say the least but the end is in sight. It’s a lot of work but it is a labor of love. I’m thankful for what these animals will provide for our family and for the lessons that I’ve learned while raising them.

Fecal Egg Count for Our Goat Herd (NOT What We Expected!) @SageandStoneHomestead
We ran a fecal egg count on our dairy goats to check for worms. Knowing which worms are present in an animal allow you to properly develop a plan to treat them rather than applying a blanket solution that may or may not actually fix the problem.

Every goat has worms – it’s just a part of the deal. However, worm loads should be carefully monitored because too much can be extremely harmful to their health. While it may seem beneficial to give dewormer on a routine basis doing so can actually cultivate a strain of medicine-resistant parasites, meaning that when things go bad, they get REAL bad.
We have a few goats that we’ve been struggling to keep weight on. They get the same feed intake as everyone else and yet they’re just a little on the thin side. Our friend Heather at Sage and Stone Homestead has her own microscope and offered to give us a hand running fecals on our goat herd. Let’s have a “Poop Party!”
Thanks to Heather’s help we now know that we have a good, healthy herd of goats and worming them is not necessary. We also know which of our does should be treated for liver fluke and have a good plan of action to treat that. It’s great to have good friends who want to help out, and that includes you. Thanks for watching the channel and for being a part of what we do here on the farm. If you enjoyed this video hit the Like button and share it with a friend – thanks!

We’re Halfway to Butcher Day // Raising Meat Chickens {Week 4}

We purchased 30 Cornish cross females from Meyer Hatchery. Cornish cross are incredibly fast growers – from hatch to butcher in only 8 weeks. We’ve done quite a bit of research on this and feel very well prepared but everyone knows there’s no replacement for experience. If you’ve thought about raising meat chickens but just haven’t made that commitment yet I hope you can look to our experiences as something you can learn from. If we can do it, so can you!
💪 AVG. WEIGHTS:
Week 1 – 3.8oz
Week 2 – 12.0oz
Week 3 – 1lb, 2.6oz
Week 4 – 2lb, 1.4oz
We’ve been waiting for the weather to warm up before we moved our meat chickens into the tractor. Having these partially-featherless birds exposed to subfreezing temperatures made me nervous so over the past week we weaned them off the heat lamp in the brooder as the temperatures slowly crept back to more normal levels. Now spring is here to stay (we hope) and with only one month left until butcher day it’s time to get these birds on pasture. As we move them around in the tractor they get a chance to forage a little – at least as much as Cornish cross chickens forage – but more importantly they’re pumping a whole lot of natural fertilizer into the field. When this is all said and done we’ll have plenty of chicken in the freezer and our pasture should be in better shape than when we started.
The feed trough that we built from a gutter last week is working out great. Starting soon we’ll be giving the birds both feeders as they continue to eat more and more and more and one feeder just won’t cut it any longer. And coming up real soon we’ll be revamping our chicken plucking machine. This thing is a dinosaur but it was given to us by a family friend who hoped we’d put it to good use. If you want to see that be sure to subscribe to the channel, and share this video with a friend as it really helps us out. Thanks so much – see y’all soon!

Our meat chickens are now 3 weeks old and are ready to move from the brooder into the chicken tractor. However, we’ve been dealing with crummy cold weather for the past several days and I was not comfortable moving the birds into an unconditioned living space when the temperatures were dipping below freezing. In the meantime, though, we transitioned the birds from chick start to broiler feed and built a couple new feeders from used parts.
The birds are growing really well and all appear to be healthy. It’s hard to believe butcher day is less than 5 weeks away. Violet is our “herd queen” and most experienced momma goat on the farm. This is her sixth freshen and we’ve been patiently waiting for the kids to drop. Violet is a rockstar mom – she does an excellent job of getting her babies dried off quickly and then nursing them. Last year she had kids in the pasture and we didn’t even know until a few hours later!
We’ve been watching Violet intently for a few days now as she cruised into her kidding window. She even threw up a false alarm at one point but of course she wanted to wait until the weather was absolutely dreadful to have her babies. All across the state wind gusts exceeded 50 MPH and locally they reached over 70 MPH, and thousands of people in our local rural electric co-op were without power for several days. We figure either the wind was strong enough it blew the babies out or the low pressure system basically created a vacuum and sucked the kids into the world (joking!).
Violet had two big bucklings and one little doeling. Right now everyone in our goat herd is low on selenium and we noticed that one of the boys would need a dose to help him along. Later that evening we gave him his shot and after a couple of days the change was evident. He continues to do great and is growing like a weed.
We still have a couple of goats left to kid this year! There is a lot happening on our homestead (some good, some bad) and we are excited to share it all with you! Thank you for liking this video and for subscribing to our channel. See y’all soon!

Preparing a Chick Brooder for Cold Weather // Raising Meat Chickens {Week 2}
Below-freezing temperatures are in the forecast – how are we preparing our baby chickens to handle the cold?
We’re raising Cornish cross meat birds for the first time and want to share the whole experience with you. We’ll be releasing a new video each week all the way through butcher day detailing things that surprised us and what we’re looking forward the next week.

These birds are growing incredibly fast and they’ll be nearly fully-feathered by the end of the week. Once they get to that point they’ll be much better at regulating their internal temperature but for now an external heat source is still required. Because we wanted butcher day to come before the heat and humidity of summer arrives we are dealing with some of the unpredictability of Kentucky weather. It was 70°F a couple of weeks ago and now we have multiple nights below freezing in the forecast (and some are thankfully already in the rearview mirror by the time this video goes up).
We’ll be transitioning the chicks off chick start and onto meat bird grower feed next week. We also started feeding them on a 12 hour ON/OFF rotation to prevent them from overeating and making themselves sick. If the weather cooperates we’ll move these meat chickens into the chicken tractor next week but I worry that we’ll have a few nights that are just too cold for that. As it is with everything flexibility in this endeavor is key.
There are lots of exciting things happening on the farm right now and we’re excited to share them with you! Please like this video and subscribe to the channel if you want to see more. Share this video with a friend, too – it really helps. See y’all soon!

HUGE Predator-Proof Brooder Holds ALL the Baby Chickens!
This large chick brooder will be the new home for our young birds. It is modular so we can adapt it to fit our needs and it is secure against rats, snakes, raccoons, and any other predator that preys on defenseless baby chickens.

We’ve been raising chickens on our homestead for a few years now and each time we bought or hatched chicks we ran into the same problem: once they get beyond one or two weeks old we have nowhere to put them. We decided the best way to handle this would be to tear down a “temporary” coop we set up a couple of years ago and build a new, ultimate brooder in its place. This area would be large enough to handle chicks from days-old all the way until they are ready to move into their permanent coop. Because of its large size we can also scale it down a little bit or raise multiple types of birds here together. No matter the situation, however our needs evolve over time, or whatever the current situation dictates, we can handle it with this new space.
Of course defense against predators was of paramount importance. Rats, snakes, raccoons, opossums, cats… everything likes to eat baby chickens. This new spaces offers an almost-impenetrable defense for our tiny birds, keeping them safe while they are most vulnerable.
