FACT #21: Birth Control Was Once Illegal in the U.S.
In 1873, Congress passed the Comstock Act which made providing birth control devices or information through the mail illegal. A lot of other states jumped on the bandwagon and also outlawed advertisement, sale, and distribution.
In 1916, New York prosecuted and sentenced Margaret Sanger to 30 days in jail for opening the first birth control clinic in the country. After failing to get Congress to repeal the Comstock act, she challenged the law by mailing a birth control device to a doctor. The stunt proved successful and the court deemed it okay if it helped a doctor’s patients.
In 1952, she opened the American Birth Control League, which would eventually become Planned Parenthood. She partnered with a doctor and helped develop the very first birth control pill.
While many states had reversed course and legalized birth control by the 60’s, many of them still prohibited circulation information on birth control. Some states outlawed possession of birth control.
That all changed in 1965 with Griswold v. Connecticut. The court ruled that the state’s prohibition of birth control was unconstitutional as it violated one’s privacy. Although a breakthrough, this only applied to married couples.
In 1971, Congress repealed major parts of the Comstock act. The next year, the Supreme Court ruled in Eisenstadt v. Baird that if privacy was a right, it applied to both married and unmarried couples.
Today, nearly 13% of women aged 15-49 use the birth control pill.

FACT #20: Mom Makes Congressman Son Vote for 19th Amendment
Did you know that a Congressman’s mommy made him vote for the 19th Amendment?
The year was 1920. Half the states allowed women to vote - but none in the south. The fight for women’s suffrage had raged for 70 years and now they finally had their chance with the 19th amendment.
It had already been ratified by 35 states. The only state left to vote in which ratification was possible was Tennessee. But it didn’t just come down to one state. It also came down to one legislator.
The measure passed the Tennessee Senate. However, when it got to the House, things got tense. The vote to table the amendment resulted in a tie. Since that failed they set out to vote on whether to ratify.
Meet 24 year old Harry T. Burn, the state’s youngest legislator . He originally voted to table the amendment, strangely he changed his vote and cast the deciding vote for ratification.
People thought he had been bribed. The following day he explained what changed him. His mother wrote him a letter urging him to vote for the amendment, saying “don’t forget to be a good boy.” He elaborated further saying, “I believe in full suffrage as a right. I know that a mother’s advice is always safest for her boy to follow, and my mother wanted me to vote for ratification.”
Sometimes mothers meddle in their children’s lives because they just can't’ help themselves, other times they do it to change history.

Fact #19: Who was First Lady Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams
Louisa Catherine Adams was the first First Lady to be born outside of the United States. In fact, she didn’t move to America until four years after marrying John Quincy Adams.
Before becoming first lady, she was a diplomat’s wife. While she was charming and classy, she was also full of grit. She moved to Russia with her 2 year old son to be with her husband. The environment was harsh, she was in poor health and had little money. While there she gave birth to a daughter who died before her second birthday.
When her husband was sent to London, Louisa set off to join him. With her young son, she took off on a 40 day trek across war torn Europe.
Her husband would fail to win re-election. However, Louisa would remain a public figure. John would run for Congress and win and spend the next 17 years of his life serving his country.
Louisa and John were both ardent supporters of abolition. In fact, Louisa helped her sort through petitions he was sent on slavery. She also was a supporter of women’s rights and even linked the plight of women to that of slaves to further the cause of both.
She received a lot of criticism for being from England. Louisa was perceived as royalty and snobby. The mud slinging was so bad she made a direct response to some of the allegations - making it the first time a woman would respond directly to false stories in the national media.
John would die from a stroke on the floor of Congress. Louisa made it in time to see him just before he passed. She spent the rest of her life defending his record and reputation and writing several autobiographies.

Fact #18: Why Did Nazi’s Hate Red Lipstick?
Did you know that the Armed Forces required female recruits to wear red lipstick to tick off Hitler?
Throughout history, wearing red lipstick was seen as an expression of female independence and rebellion. Back in ancient Egypt, women who wore it were prostitutes. In 20th century America, women in red lipstick were seen as immoral and heretics. Suffragettes began wearing red lipstick just to tick off men and assert themselves. But that was about to change.
During World War 2, more and more women joined the workforce to replace men. Women started wearing red lipstick as a sign of confidence.
Companies even began producing colors for the cause, like “Patriot Red” and “Fighting Red.”
When women joined the armed forces, they were even required to wear red lipstick. All of a sudden, red lipstick became synonymous with American values and, of course, a disdain for fascism.
While red lipstick was a sign of female resilience in the U.S., to Hitler it was repulsive. He decreed that the ideal German woman was wholesome, clean, and fresh-faced - that meant no makeup. Hitler even shutdown cosmetic companies, ruling them a non-essential commodity.
Eventually Allied countries realized it aggravated Hitler to see women in red lipstick and they started encouraging women to wear it. In fact, the government got Elizabeth Arden to create a lip and nail color for women to wear in the Army. It was called “Montezuma Red.”

Fact #17: How Misogynistic Men Helped Elect America's First Female Mayor
Susanna Madora Salter became America’s first female mayor at the age of 27. A group of misogynistic men accidentally helped her get elected in a plan so dumb only politicians could come up with it.
The year was 1887 in Argonia, Kansas. Susanna was involved with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, a group that advocated for prohibition. That year, women had been given the right to vote in city elections.
The group saw this election as a prime opportunity. First, they could use the power of the new female vote to help get prohibition candidates elected. Second, if successful, it would help the town see the group as legit.
A meeting was held to choose their candidates. A few anti-prohibition men showed up to heckle, thinking they could interrupt the process and influence who was selected. It didn’t work.
The men set out on a new plan. Back in the day, elections were run very loosely. No one registered before Election Day and political groups would make pre-printed ballots that voters would drop in the ballot box.
With this in mind, the men set out on a new plan. They crafted a ballot that was almost identical to the women’s group. The only difference was they swapped out the mayoral candidate for Susanna. They thought people would see a female candidate and write the whole group off as extremists and lunatics.
People were confused, especially the women’s group. They realized what happened and asked if Susanna if she wanted to be taken off the ballot. She refused, the group dropped their chosen candidate and backed her. By the end of the day, a group of misogynistic men had just just knocked down a glass ceiling and made Susanna the first female mayor in the United States.

First Lady Elizabeth Monroe grew up in New York City, the nation’s capital at the time. She was just a teenager when she met James Monroe, a representative from Virginia. After the pair married, they moved there so James could practice law.
Years later, James was appointed as American minister to France. Elizabeth joined him in Paris and became a star amongst the French elite. She was even called la belle americaine.
Elizabeth used her popularity to further American diplomacy. Marie-Adreinne Lafayete was imprisoned after her husband Marquis de Lafayette left France. He was a leader in the French Revolution and had helped the US during our own Revolutionary War. Elizabeth visited Marie in prison - a move that helped get her released.
When James became president, Elizabeth failed to fully embrace her role as First Lady. The American people saw her as a European elitist. Elizabeth didn’t help her image much, as she stayed away from those she viewed unsophisticated.
Unlike former First Lady Dolley Madison, Elizabeth didn’t host or attend many events - she even missed her husband's inauguration and reception.
While part of this can be blamed on her attitude, the main reason she refrained from social visits was her health. She had what is believed to be epilepsy. This information wasn’t publicly shared, so when she skipped events for health reasons the American public assumed she had mental health problems.
In 1826, she had a seizure that caused her to fall into an open fireplace. Elizabeth got severe burns and died just three years later at the age of 62.

Did you know that an African American woman faked being a man to serve in the Civil War?
Cathay Williams grew up a house slave in Missouri. Union forces nabbed her hometown of Jefferson City in 1861. Captured slaves were forced to serve in military support roles, so Cathay ended up cooking and washing.
Cathay wanted to do more. Since women weren’t allowed to serve, she posed as a man. Enlisting under the name William Cathay, she told the recruiter she was a 22-year old cook. Somehow an Army surgeon didn’t realize she was a woman and determined that she was fit to serve.
Cathay served alongside her male cousin, who kept her gender a secret. After two years of service, she was found out by a doctor that was treating her and was given an honorable discharge.
Cathay tried applying for a disability pension a few years before her death. Although she had neuralgia, diabetes, walked with a crutch, and had all her toes amputated, she was denied twice.
More than 400 women posed as men so they could serve in the Civil War. However, Cathay was the only African-American woman to do so.

Victoria Woodhull ran for president in 1872 - making her the female presidential candidate. It would be another 50 years before women would even earn the right to vote.
Victoria was a bit of a renaissance woman. She was a stockbroker, newspaper publisher, and activist. Victoria advocated for things such women’s suffrage, free love, mystical socialism, and the Greenback movement.
Victoria grew up traveling with her sister in family medicine and fortune telling shows. She dabbled in psychic readings and clairvoyance.
Victoria married at the age of 15 but it wouldn’t last. After her divocre, the sisters joined forces with Cornelius Vanderbilt. They set up a stockbrokerage firm and then turned those profits into a women’s rights magazine that advocated for things like legal prostitution and dress reform.
While running for president, she was criticized for her lifestyle. In retaliation, she published a story about an affair between a prominent reverend and a married parishioner. Victoria and her sister were imprisoned for 7 months for sending obscene materials through the mail.
After being acquitted, Victoria divorced again and moved to England. She spent the rest of her life hobnobbing with the British elite and writing a variety of publications. She even started the Humanitarian, a magazine dedicated to eugenics.

You’ve heard about angry feminists burning their bras. However, no bras were actually harmed in the process.
The year was 1968 and the Miss America Pageant was about to take place. The organization New York Radical Women believed the pageant perpetuated beauty standards that oppressed women.
Together they decided to stage a demonstration against it using civil rights era protest techniques. The women took off to Atlantic City to protest the pageant on the boardwalk.
Massive crowd of women turned out and passersby were captivated by the demonstration. At one point they even crowned a sheep, comparing the pageant to livestock competitions. Later on they crashed the pageant and hung a women’s liberation banner from the balcony of the venue.
Although the group wanted to burn bras, the police department nixed the idea since they were on the boardwalk. Instead, protesters decided to throw what they called “instruments of female torture” into trashcans - items like mops, girdles, pots and pans, Playboy magazines, and finally, bras.
A local reporter commented that “men burn draft cards and what next? Will women burn bras?" Just like that, the term bra burner was coined and the rest was history.

FACT #12: Who was First Lady Dolley Madison?
Dolley Madison became First Lady in 1809 when her husband James Madison took office as the third President of the United States. Dolley was prepared for her new role, as she served as a stand-in first lady for former president and bachelor Thomas Jefferson.
Dolley held weekly receptions for anyone who wanted to come. Her willingness to entertain peasants bothered some elitists, with a Massachusetts Senator complaining that she mixed “all classes of people…greasy boots and silk stockings.”
Dolley became a style icon of the day. She was known for her imported clothes and turbans that women began copying.
She shied away from political statements, but was nevertheless an important part of Madison’s administration. She befriended his allies and enemies, making sure to mend and maintain a roster of key relationships - something that helped him win his second term.
When her husband was inaugurated, the Commander of the Washington Navy Yard asked Dolley to sponsor a dance and dinner. Her attendance at this event marks the first inaugural ball - a tradition that continues to this day.
She was stubborn and not about to let the British destroy the people’s house in the War of 1812. As the White House was burning to the ground, she was running around trying to save important documents and art. In fact, she refused to leave unless the giant portrait of George Washington could be taken down and carried out with her
Dolley was immensely popular during and after her tenure as First Lady. After leaving office she was awarded an honorary seat in Congress and she was invited to be the first private citizen to issue a telegraph.
She died at the age of 81. President Zachary Taylor and his entire administration attended her funeral. He referred to her as First Lady in his eulogy- coining a term that would forever be associated with presidential spouses.

Miram A. Ferguson became governor of Texas two weeks after Nellie Ross. Miriam's husband, Governor James Edward Ferguson, was impeached on 10 charges of embezzlement. Since he was prohibited from running for Governor he offered up his wife as a puppet candidate in the special election to replace him. They were very obvious about it - even having her use the slogan “Two Governors for the Price of One.” She won, however, she lost reelection. She ran again a few years later, serving a second term as governor from 1933-1937. While in office, she was accused, along with her husband, of accepting bribes. They also gave out so many pardons - nearly 4,000- that voters changed the state's constitution so that only politically independent Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles could issue pardons.

FACT #10: Who was the “real” first female Governor - Part 1?
Depending on how the question is asked, one of four women could be considered the first female Governor.
Nellie Ross became governor of Wyoming in 1925 - making her the first woman to hold the title in the U.S. But this only happened because her husband, Governor William Bradford Ross, died from appendicitis less than two years into his first term. A special election was held to replace him. Nellie wavered on running for office. Eventually, Republicans nominated their guy. The Democrats went ahead and nominated Nellie. She was informed and then just 45 minutes before the deadline, she accepted the Democrat’s nomination. Sympathy vote or or help from her husband's last name and connections, she ended up winning by a larger margin than her husband did.

FACT #11: Who was the “real” first female Governor - Part 1?
Lurleen Wallace became governor of Alabama in 1967. Her husband, George Wallace, was governor prior to her. He planned on running for president in 1968 and wanted all the perks and favors that came with the governor’s office. However, term limits kept him from being governor again - so he had his wife run. Lurleen won but he was the de facto governor. His staff remained in the administration, he had an office across Lurleen, and they both were referred to by staff as Governor. She died less than 2 years into her term. Several years before assuming office doctors noticed questionable tissue when she gave birth to her last child. Doctors only told her husband, who decided to withhold it from Lurleen. This turned into uterine cancer which then required a hysterectomy. Just 5 months into her term as governor the cancer returned. She died less than two years into her term as governor.
The first woman elected governor -who got there on her own ability and not her husband’s- was Ella Grasso. She was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly and later served as the state’s Secretary of State for more than decade. She also chaired the Democratic State Platform Committee for 12 years
After becoming governor, she fought to keep it. Her own lieutenant governor tried to challenge her in the primary. Ella won her second term. Sadly she resigned in 1980, less than two years into her second term due to ovarian cancer. She passed away the following year. She may have been a pioneer for women but did not fit the mold of a typical feminist - she opposed abortion and did not support affirmative action.

KEYBOARD PATRIOTS - Episode #1
Today we are reviewing the best comments from the New York Department of Labor’s Facebook page. People pay into unemployment and then learn the harsh realization that their government will make you fight to the death to get your benefits. These are not entitlements - people are forced to pay unemployment insurance. However, things don’t always go like the bureaucrats promise - and disgruntled Americans are having it. These are their stories…
