Ultrasound is a prime tool used to check the health of the mother and baby during pregnancy. It gives a real-time view of the movement of organs, blood flow, and other internal processes safely and painlessly.
But ultrasound waves cannot penetrate the adult skull. Otherwise, ultrasound would also be a prime go-to for brain tumor, brain-injury, and other brain examination scenarios.
But what if ultrasound could bypass the skull to reach the brain?
Neurosurgeon Dr. Natenal Ben-Shalom first installed a 3D-printed acrylic window in the skull of a brain tumor patient several years ago that allows ultrasound waves to pass through to the brain—and he hasn’t looked back since.
CT or MRI are the standard diagnostic and imaging tools used in brain surgery scenarios, he says. But they are expensive, involve long wait times, and do not provide a real-time image.
Ultrasound can “give you an immediate and very active image of what’s going on,” he adds.
Dr. Ben-Shalom is specially trained in neuroplastic and reconstructive surgery. This grounding reflects another function of cranial prosthetics, like “the window,” in that they offset physical deformity. This aspect of the neurosurgery patient’s need has been largely ignored, he says.
“I was asking myself, ‘How come, in neurosurgery, we’re so good at removing the tumor safely, but the patients every morning, they look in the mirror, they’re set back to the trauma of the disease.’”
Dr. Ben-Shalom tells the story of a brain surgery patient left physically deformed after surgery, and what installing “the window” has meant for their confidence in their brain health and also their physical appearance.
On “Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon,” we look at how “the window” might offset the fear and risk of brain surgery, and what it could mean for the future of cancer treatment.
