At our homestead we use chicken leg bands as a reliable and convenient way to keep track of our birds. The bands are made of plastic, which makes them durable and long-lasting.
Our main reason for using chicken leg bands is that they allow us to easily establish the age of the birds by using a unique color for each year. This is important for managing our flock, as it allows us to determine which birds are at the optimal age for egg laying and which birds are older. Removing older birds is necessary for the proper care and management of our flock.
The chicken leg bands have been safe for the birds. They are flexible and don’t appear to constrict or cause any discomfort to the birds’ legs. They are easy to put on and take off.
Here’s the thing. You need to maximize your flock’s egg production without a lot of paperwork or memorization skills. You have enough on your mind. Make your life easier by banding the birds by year so you can cycle your flock and keep egg production at its peak.

More information about us:
My husband, Chuck, and I are full time homesteaders at Pioneer Mountain Homestead in the Appalachian Mountains of south-central Pennsylvania. We have a sawmill, produce garden, honeybees, layer hens, laying ducks, pigs, and goats. Additionally, we provide boat and camper storage to nearby visitors of Raystown Lake and sell firewood and lumber in south central Pennsylvania. Our journey is to be as self-reliant as we can be; to live as much as we can from the resources we have at hand; to effectively be productive with as minimal environmental impact as possible; to raise food in an organic manner; and to give back to our community through education or demonstration. We are always learning, as well. Life is always an adventure! We enjoy learning from others and seeing what other people are doing as well. -Bren
