Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter video game, developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision in November 2007 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A version for the Wii was released in November 2009 subtitled Reflex Edition. The fourth title in the Call of Duty series and the first game to have an M (Mature) rating in the United States, Call of Duty 4 moves away from previous World War II tropes and sets itself in a modern setting. It was in production for two years and uses a game engine called the IW engine, owned by Infinity Ward.

The story takes place in 2011, when a radical leader executed the president of an unrecognized country in the Middle East, and an "Ultranationalist" movement starts a civil war in Russia. The conflicts described in the story are seen from the perspective of an American Marine and a British Special Air Service soldier and take place in various locations, including the United Kingdom, the Middle East, Azerbaijan, Russia and Ukraine. The multiplayer section of the game features several modes, and contains a level system that allows the player to unlock additional weapons, accessories and camouflage schemes as they progress.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare received universal critical acclaim and is generally considered the best game in the series. In particular, the gameplay, multiplayer and storyline received much praise, while there were critics who said the game failed to substantially innovate the first-person shooter (FPS) genre. It received many awards from various specialized websites, including "Best Game for Xbox 360" by IGN and "Game of the Year" by GameSpy. It was the best seller in 2007, selling around seven million copies in January 2008 and more than thirteen million in May 2009. Since its release, Call of Duty 4 has contributed to the series currently dominating sales in the genre. Very influential, it is usually included in lists of the best video games of all time; IGN named it the fifth best first-person shooter of all time. In 2010 it was included in the book 1001 VideoGames You Have to Play Before You Die. It was followed by two games that continue the story: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. An enhanced version of the game was released in November 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, along with some special versions of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
