The North Las Vegas Police Department has made public the body camera footage and a 911 call related to a fatal police shooting that occurred last month.

The footage pertains to an incident reported on Saturday, September 24, near Aviary Way & Grand Teton Drive.

According to the initial police report, authorities received a call just after 10 p.m. regarding a man in his 20s who was allegedly attempting to break into a residence with a long pole. The NLVPD released a copy of a 911 call in which a witness describes seeing a man trying to open a sliding door in a backyard using a "4-foot-long metal implement."

The caller informs the 911 operator that the man had yelled at him, making statements like "if I want to die." The operator advises the caller to seek safety indoors and avoid engaging with the individual. The caller also mentions that the man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The body camera video shows an officer, identified as Sgt. Paul Sanderson, approaching a man in the backyard. The man, later identified as Darin Dyer, is seen with an AR-15 rifle resting against his chest, secured by a strap around his neck and back. The NLVPD released two videos, one showing the shooting in real time and another slowed down to focus on Dyer's actions just before Sanderson fires his weapon.

In the video, Sgt. Sanderson can be heard greeting Dyer as he approaches, who responds courteously. Sanderson asks about the presence of the gun and instructs Dyer to keep it within sight. Initially, Dyer appears to comply with Sanderson's instructions, and the officer informs someone via radio that he is with Dyer in a breezeway.

Sanderson mentions that another officer is on their way to the front, but Dyer's demeanor becomes increasingly hostile, with profanities directed at Sanderson.

"I don't give a f***, dude," Dyer says.

Sanderson continues to speak over Dyer, explaining that they heard banging and were investigating the situation. Sanderson points out that Dyer is outside with a firearm.

Dyer responds provocatively, asking what Sanderson will do and making defiant statements. He challenges Sanderson to shoot him and uses explicit language while suggesting that Sanderson should come to his front door.

In response, Sanderson says, "Nothing," as Dyer speaks. Dyer briefly turns towards the house before turning back to face Sanderson.

"Just put your fu-" Sanderson begins to say before opening fire. The slowed-down version of the video reveals that Dyer appears to be holding his AR-15 with both hands as he turns back towards Sanderson. Dyer is not visible when Sanderson fires his weapon.

The North Las Vegas Police Department stated that Dyer's AR-15 was loaded with 30 rounds, including one in the chamber. Dyer was transported to UMC, where he was pronounced dead.
