Performance Notes:

While originally written for piano, Faure’s “Pavane” has become much more well-known from a later setting for orchestra with an optional “invisible” (off-stage) chorus. A “pavane” is a court dance, originally from Italy, but later adopted in Spain, and this is the style of dance the composer intends to evoke through his music.
While the phrases are sometimes quite long, they may be sensibly broken; and this is preferable to stretching phrases beyond what is able to be played beautifully. While the individual soloists should feel somewhat musically “untethered,” there should be some attention to matching the style. In particular, any subtle alterations, for example, to rhythmical figures like the dotted figure below should be consistent between all the soloists. Many musicians choose to play these notes just a fraction later than what would be strictly metrical.

Dynamics and tempo markings which did not appear in the original orchestral piece are shown as below, as is a relatively new notational device showing a diminuendo to nothing (akin to the marking "niente").
