BCF 324: Rebuilding Chicago with Affordable Housing with Moses Hall

Moses Hall is a Chicago-based real estate investor working to revitalize the south side of Chicago. In January 2019, Moses launched MoHall Commercial & Urban Development. There, his focus is on redevelopment through commercial real estate and investment properties. In 2019, Mo was highlighted by Realtor Magazine, being named in their 30 under 30 issue.

He had dreams of a career in real estate since he was a child, but the 2008 recession put a pause on those plans. Moses talked about how he got back to real estate, and when he had his ‘lightbulb moment’ with a unique type of asset: artist lofts. Moses discusses the benefits and opportunities in artist lofts.

Many of Mo’s investments are considerable ‘affordable housing,’ which can be a loaded word to a lot of investors. We discussed why real estate investors shouldn’t shy away from affordable housing opportunities. Moses also told me how he vets his tenants and makes sure his affordable spaces run (and produce cash flow) smoothly. In the Chicago market, new legislation is making harder for real estate investors. Despite good intentions, many politicians simply don’t understand the intricacies of the real estate business.

Of course, all the talk of politics led us to discussing how to improve communities. That’s Mo’s ultimate mission and he has a lot of ideas about how his real estate investment can rebuild Chicago’s south side. We also talked about the larger market forces at work. Moses gave us some insight on his predictions for inflationary pressures, the chances of another recession, and more.
