A wildfire, named the “Bird Springs Wildfire,” was reported Monday afternoon in a rural area southwest of the Las Vegas valley. A teenager survived a 400-foot fall from a dangerous canyon in Washington state over the Memorial Day weekend, emerging with only minor injuries, according to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. The 19-year-old fell while walking along a former trail under the High Steel Bridge, one of the tallest railroad bridges in the U.S. Despite warning signs, people frequently disregard the dangers of these trails, said Tim Ripp, a Mason County sheriff’s patrol corporal. Israeli researchers at Jerusalem’s City of David archeological site have uncovered a remarkably well-preserved 2,300-year-old gold ring from the Hellenistic period. The ring, made of gold and set with a red stone, likely a garnet, shows no signs of rust or weathering. Tehiya Gangate, an excavation team member, discovered the ring, creating much excitement among her colleagues. The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced that the ring will be displayed to the public during Jerusalem Day in early June. The ring, small enough to fit a woman’s pinky or a young child’s finger, was found in a joint excavation by the IAA and Tel Aviv University, supported by the Elad Foundation. Spain has committed €1 billion in military aid to Ukraine this year, following a significant defence and security agreement signed in Madrid by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The Earth’s liquid molten outer core, composed mainly of iron and nickel, generates an electromagnetic field extending from the north to the south pole, protecting the planet from harmful solar radiation. Fluctuations in this magnetic field, caused by changes in solar wind and solar storms, affect geomagnetic field models essential for navigation in satellites, planes, ships, and cars. Magnetic field models vary depending on data collected either on the Earth’s surface or from low Earth orbiting satellites. While past research attributed differences in these models to space weather activity, a recent study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics reveals that modeling errors also contribute significantly to these discrepancies.
